Who Are We?
Alain C. Balmanno
Alain has a BA in political science, and a JD from Brigham Young University, an LLM (advanced law degree) from the Judge Advocate General’s School in military law and another LLM from American University in public international law. He attended the Summer Institute on National Security Law in 1995 at the University of Virginia.
He is a Retired Army Officer. His significant assignments include: Assistant Professor, United States Military Academy, West Point, NY, August 1995 – September 2000; Deputy Judge Advocate (legal advisor), U.S. Forces, SHAPE (NATO Headquarter), Aug 1992–Aug 1994; and Chief, International & Operational Law, Kaiserslautern, Germany, June 1990- Aug 1992. He deployed to Northern Iraq during Operation Provide Comfort at the end of the First Gulf War.
His military awards include the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Joint Service Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Southwest Asia Bronze Star, the Humanitarian Service Medal, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal, and the Kuwait Liberation Medal.
At West Point He spent five years as an assistant professor of law teaching constitutional law, international law, military law, and national security law.
Since retiring from the Army, he has spent the past 17 years practicing law as a litigator, for the Utah Attorney General, and in private practice.
He and his wife Donna Yoder have been married for 44 years and are the parents of 5 children, and grandparents of 12 grandchildren.
Dr. Anneke Garcia Anneke
Dr. Anneke Garcia Anneke is a mom of boys, a cook, a freelance illustrator, and an instructional design consultant with a background in academia. She served in the Japan Tokyo South mission; has attended English and Spanish wards in the States; has taught primary, young women’s, youth Sunday School and Gospel Doctrine; and is currently excited about her newest role as the emergency preparedness specialist. She has a PhD in Instructional Psychology and Technology with a specialization in Second Language Acquisition (a field of linguistics that focuses on how we teach foreign languages) with undergrad degrees in French and Graphic Design. She reads a lot of science fiction and listens to a lot of world music and might still be the world’s most avid U2 fan. She has lived in Japan, Taiwan, and Mainland China and really loves cooking and eating international food, like, all day every day. She and her husband and their two toddlers live in the Rose Park neighborhood of Salt Lake City. Cris Balmanno has worked in the IT industry for over 20 years, maintaining and creating data security systems for private fortune 500
companies, and public institutions such as the NIH.
A motorcycle enthusiast and a lifelong sports fan, Cris can add freelance sports writer to his accomplishments. He particularly loves BYU, the Bears, and the Cubs.
Cris has served in the Oakland, CA mission, as a Gospel Doctrine teacher, Young Men President, and in other capacities for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Although he currently lives in Utah, he has also lived in Germany, Belgium, Virginia, New York, and Maryland.
Cris is married to his wife of 21 years, has 3 children, 2 dogs, and three gaming systems.
For most of her life Marlo has been a fan of cheesy scifi movies, shows, and books and creating things with her hands. Her life long affair with fashion and fabric has also merged with her geek side in her seamstress and design companies.
A navy brat, Marlo is a world traveler and calls Maryland her home state.
She is a devout Mormon, the creator of Latter-Day Left and the Let’s Talk Politics: Sister’ Night program for the LDS Dems of America, and has dedicated her time to strengthening her community for over a decade.
She is also the mother of 3 and a wife of 21 years.
